ASME Hosts Briefing Highlighting Challenges and Opportunities ... ASME Hosts Briefing Highlighting Challenges and Opportunities ... ASME Hosts Briefing Highlighting Challenges and Opportunities Facing Robotics in the United StatesRep. Rob Woodall (far right), co-chair of the Congressional Robotics Caucus, addresses the panel of robotics experts at the congressional briefing on Dec. 12. Taking part as panelists during the briefing were (left to right) Dr. Charles Thorpe, Dr. Byron Clayton, Jeff Burnstein and Milton Guerry. On December 12, ASME sponsored a briefing on Capitol Hill to highlight Robotics in the Manufacturing Environment An Insiders Look at Advanced Technologies in the United States. The event was co-sponsored by the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon, the Computing Research Association, IEEE-USA and the Robotic Industries Association (RIA) and convened in conjunction with the Congressional Robotics Caucus and the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. The purpose of the briefing was to inform members of Congress and congressional staff on what industry leaders are doing to prepare for the future adoption of robotics technologies in the manufacturing environment.ASME brought together a panel of leading experts in the field of robotics to share their thoughts and insights on opportunities and challenges facing the future of manufacturing robotics, as well as how government, industry and universities are collaborating to ensure the United States maintains leadership in robotics. (Left to right) ASME Executive Director Tom Costabile, ASME President Said Jahanmir and Rep. Tom Reed (R-NY) at the ASME-sponsored congressional briefing, Robotics in the Manufacturing Environment An Insiders Look at Advanced Technologies in the United States, on Dec. 12 in Washington, D.C.ASME Executive Director Tom Costabile kicked off the event with welcoming remarks in which he discussed the importance of embracing technol ogical advancements in manufacturing robotics while remaining mindful of its effect on the American workforce. ASME President Said Jahanmir echoed this sentiment, noting that, As we continue to see a rise in the integration of robotics and automation technology into our daily lives, its important to understand that along with the ease and benefits this technology provides, it also comes with its share of challenges. He then introduced Congressmen Mike Doyle (D-PA) and Rob Woodall (R-GA), co-chairs of the Congressional Robotics Caucus, who discussed the importance of partnerships between the manufacturing, education and workforce development sectors.Dr. Byron Clayton, chief executive officer of the Manufacturing USA Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, began the panel discussion with a presentation addressing a challenge that is prevalent within the world of engineering workforce development. He commented that an increasingly common issue for many employers today is t hat students are coming out of school ill-prepared for the workforce, which includes a lack of understanding and knowledge of codes and standards. Dr. Clayton commented that this leaves many fearing that an increased presence of robots in the workplace will nullify the need for the American worker in the future. However, this worry can be diminished with adequate preparation as robots and human workers are most effective when they erleichterung one another and work in tandem. (Left to right) Rep. Mike Doyle (D-PA), co-chair of the Congressional Robotics Caucus, with ASME Executive Director Tom Costabile at the congressional briefing in December.Jeff Burnstein, president of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3) and the Robotic Industries Association, (RIA), followed Dr. Claytons presentation. In his remarks, Burnstein pointed out that automation and robots in factories are not a new phenomenon. He stressed that robots have been in factories for more than 50 yea rs and that although the technology was pioneered right here in the United States, U.S. leadership in robotics technology is rapidly waning. Burnstein noted that the United States is no longer among the top five technologically advanced countries and is currently ranking behind countries such as Korea, Japan, and Germany. One factor behauptung more technologically adept countries share is that they have ardently embraced robots for some time. China is also now rapidly ascending through the ranks thanks in part to government initiatives and programs that specifically call for industry to embrace robots. Burnstein cautioned that if the United States fails to get on motherboard with robots in the workplace, its rank among technologically advanced nations will only continue to decrease.Following Burnsteins presentation, Milton Guerry, president of the customer- and industry-focused SCHUNK USA team, presented to the audience. Guerry began by showing examples of robot prototypes that have been developed to work in conjunction with workers and keep them safe in factory settings rather than replace them in their job functions. He elaborated on points made by Burnstein, explaining that, Robotics is a technology that is keeping us competitive. He went on to say that China is deploying robots at an astounding rate, with the worldwide supply of robots projected to grow by 65 percent from 2016 to 2019. While the United States is playing a part, other economies are playing a significantly larger role and reaping the benefits. (Left to right) ASME Congressional Fellow Laurel Kuxhaus, ASME Executive Director Tom Costabile and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL). Kuxhaus is serving her term as a 2018-2019 Congressional Fellow in Rep. Lipinskis office.Dr. Charles Thorpe, dean of the School and Arts and Sciences at Clarkson University and co-chair of the ASME Robotics Public Policy Task Force, rounded out the panelists with some closing remarks. Dr. Thorpe previously served as an ASME Federal Fellow in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as assistant director for Advanced Manufacturing and Robotics and part of the White House team that created the National Advanced Manufacturing Initiative. In discussing the need to embrace these new technological advances, Thorpe said, We talk a lot in Washington, D.C. about whole-of-government efforts. This cant be a whole-of-government effort, this has to be a whole-of-country effort. He stressed the need for strong public-private partnerships, with federal, state and local governments working in conjunction with industry and academia to strengthen the United States overall research and development (RD) efforts and to embrace advanced robotic technology.Following the briefing, Tom Costabile met with a bipartisan group of engineers and engineering champions in Congress to discuss a wide range of issues important to ASME. In addition to his longtime friend, Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-OR), Costabile met w ith Reps. Mike Doyle (D-PA), Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL), Dan Lipinski (D-IL), Tom Reed (R-NY), Paul Tonko (D-NY) and Rob Woodall (R-GA) to discuss a myriad of topics ranging from scientific integrity, clean energy and manufacturing, as well as standards in the robotics industry and science, technology, engineering and mathematics.During these visits, Costabile also stressed the importance of ASMEs Federal Government Fellowship program which provides engineers with the opportunity to serve in the Executive or Legislative branches of government for one year. The offices of Reps. Lipinski and Reed currently hosting ASME Congressional Fellows Laurel Kuxhaus and KC Morris, respectively expressed their deep appreciation for the program and their eagerness to host more Congressional Fellows in the future.ASME is accepting applications for our 2019-2020 ASME Congressional Fellowships in Energy, Bioengineering and Manufacturing. Resume Insecurity

Resume InsecurityResume InsecurityResumes are a treakoranvers trove of personal information. What security steps do employers take to protect your identity from being lifted?Proper storage of employee and applicant records. It welches just another item on the human resources audit checklist, right after display federal, state and OSHA labor law posters. After checking off a few other items on her checklist, Ellen B. Vance, an HR consultant and auditor, asked to see the storage room. The client led her to an unlocked storage closet in the middle of the old building, surrounded by half of the nonprofits 40 employees. When she opened the door, Vance encountered 15 large file-folder boxes. When we moved to this new location, we just put this stuff in there, said the client.Vance and the client started opening boxes. As they did, it became clear that this stuff included photocopies of birth certificates Social Security cards drivers licenses and I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification forms that listed employees Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, maiden names, signatures - everything a criminal needs to perpetrate identity theft. I welches about ready to pass out, seeing all this stuff, said Vance, senior consultant and advisory services practice leader at Titan Group, an HR consultancy in Richmond, Va.Why should you care about the poor compliance procedures at a nonprofit in Virginia? If youve applied to a job there or anywhere in the last decade, your resume may be equally exposed, your personal information similarly vulnerable to identity theft should anyone gain access to an unlocked closet and a stack of file folders. With the advent of e-mailed resumes, electronic storage and online applications, the thief need not even get so close your resume may be open to attack from an unscrupulous recruiter or hacker.Too few companies employ the safeguards necessary to protect applicant data, and almost none inform clients of their security practices befo re requesting a resume and applicant information. The economy has made matters somewhat worse, according to HR managers who said the employers market has left job seekers feeling compelled to hand over information they would normally be reluctant to reveal and distribute it to dozens of sources in the hopes of finding a job. Criminals have even been known to post fake job listings to capture the data of unsuspecting job seekers. But help is on the way Employers are on notice to improve resume data protection after data breaches precipitated several lawsuits and government action. Whats more, job seekers can implement their own safeguards to avoid being the putting their resume in the wrong hands.Fumbled dataInterviews with hiring professionals confirm the anecdotal evidence Even recruiting agencies that use sophisticated applicant tracking system (ATS) software to store and protect job applications often leave the applications open to theft by allowing access to anybody and everybody who walks by an unsecured terminal companies leave sensitive information moldering in unlocked closets accessible to all and job applicants data gets left on laptops that get stolen and on USB thumb drives that get misplaced. In her experience, Vance said that small firms without formal HR departments are most likely to fumble data. But make no mistake large corporations with entrenched HR processes are still liable to mishandle job-applicant or employee data In June, U.S. Insurer Aetna was sued after allegedly failing to protect personal information belonging to employees and job applicants. This was direct fallout from an incident in which the companys job-application Web site was breached by cybercriminals, as Aetna disclosed on May 28. For its part, the Gap gelbkreuzgas personal information, including Social Security numbers, for some 800,000 U.S. and Canadian job seekers, the company admitted in a September 2007 press release.Several lawsuits that followed major breaches like t he ones at Aetna and Gap and some action by Congress and state legislatures have put employers on notice that they need to improve resume and job-application date protection. Can we blame the ATSes?Job-application information is walking out the door in a number of ways, but often, insecure software is to blame. Research firm Forrester Research recently found that more than 62 percent of 200 surveyed companies experienced a security breach in the previous 12 months because of insecure software. Most were likely caused by a SQL injection attack. In a SQL injection, a hacker uses a Web sites online form to gain control of the database. Security procedures are designed to filter and flgel such attacks, but hackers are constantly developing new codes and techniques and almost no database is safe, said a security analyst who works for one of the major ATS vendors. If you have an application publicly available on the Internet with form fields, people could potentially execute database statem ents if proper eingabe filtering is not performed, said the individual, who asked not to be identified. How do ATS vendors fend off a SQL injection? With the exception of the aforementioned vendor, all of the major ATS vendors contacted for this article declined to participate out of fear they might encourage hackers to target their software. The ATS vendor who did speak to us said his company uses filters to prevent a SQL injection and XSS (cross-site scripting) to find and patch vulnerable code in the database software. The ATS vendor monitors activity logs for such types of attempted breaches against its Web-based applicant tracking and performance management software. In addition, the ATS vendor stores the resumes and applicant data for its clients at their own facility only two people - the vendors CEO and the security analyst himself - have physical access to servers that are accessed via biometric palm-print recognition.A people problemBut technology is only part of the pro blem. All the software in the world wont protect applicant data if humans handle the technology recklessly.Rachel Rice-Haase, human-resources and marketing coordinator for Oberstadt Landscapes Nursery Inc. in Fremont, Wis., has witnessed that recklessness first hand. In a previous position at a recruiting company, recruiters used an ATS that Rice-Haase called pretty up to date to process applications. The companys help desk made sure to give tutorials to recruiters so they knew how to use the ATS applications. It all seemed pretty advanced, Rice-Haase said. The software probably was sophisticated when it came to security and features, but the more she looked at it, the more Rice-Haase realized the company was using it carelessly. You had anybody, even people who werent recruiters, going in and accessing applicants information, she said. You might have 10 recruiters, and they all have access to everybodys candidates. Its not just people youve interviewed. Its the person sitting acros s from you, down the hall, (they) can get in there and look at (any job applicants information). That part was always baffling to me. Sure, you sign a little form saying, I wont take this information home with me. But you have to wonder, when all this information is available to everybody at the recruiting center, how far that goes?It can go pretty far. As Rice-Haase describes it, the ATS collected information including Social Security number, date of birth, drivers-license number - all this stuff youd rather not have anybody and everybody have access to, she said, and thats typical of ATS software. With the software, recruiters could create a resume for any candidate and e-mail it from the system. Convenient? Yes. Dangerous? Absolutely. Recruiters could e-mail out personal information or entire applications, whether by accident or for illicit purposes. And sometimes a company doesnt have a clue - or perhaps doesnt much care - where its data is stored or how to prevent data loss. T he Virginia nonprofit company with the unlocked storage room is another classic example of blissful ignorance Even though the company is legally responsible for safekeeping of the confidential information stored on I-9 forms, the staff just didnt know what was in those 15 boxes.Titan Groups Vance encouraged her client to go through the files, pull out the forms, put them into either a burn bin or a shredder, and to have a witness on hand to make sure the records were verifiably demolished. She looked at me with a look of horror on her face, Vance said. (She was) staring at behauptung boxes. She didnt know how many contained employee files, so she had to go through all of them. Theyre a very conscientious client. It was one of those cases where they didnt know what they didnt know. They didnt have an HR person there to advise them on it.People problem, technology solutionMany organizations fail to grasp the scope of data protection or understand that it goes beyond the technology, sa id Jenny Yang, senior manager of product marketing for data-loss prevention at Symantec, a security-technology company. They dont understandWhere the confidential data isWhere its going and how its moving - for example, is it being e-mailed out as part of a monthly report to the vice president of human resources, or is it being casually e-mailed around by recruiters as was done at Rice-Haases former recruiting agency employer? How to prevent it from leaving an organizationCompanies like Symantec provide some technology solutions to the problem of managers who mishandle applicant data. Symantec makes a product that it claims will search a companys entire network for sensitive data, like Social Security numbers, even if its on a USB memory stick attached to someones laptop. It should also ID and block such data from being transmitted outside the companys network, either by a negligent employee or a hacker. But such software wont help job seekers unless until the unlikely scenario in wh ich every single potential employer has opted to buy it, and few companies will tell applicants whether they use such technology.Unlike e-commerce sites, which advertise their security practices to gain the trust of consumers about to hand over credit-card data, few employers advertise the steps they take to protect your resume and job application. To protect your resume and sensitive data, the best practice, for now, Vance said, is to make less of it available.

Heres a breakdown of what could be in your paycheck, as well as what it all means.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neur oscience, and moreIn this example below, lets say youre making an annual salary of $50,000 at an awesome job in North Carolina. This is your fourth paycheck since you started working and you have health, dental and vision insurance, positiv an employer-sponsored 401(k) retirement account that you signed up for and are contributing 6 percent to from every paycheck.Setting up direct depositNow that youre getting a paycheck every two weeks or so, make sure you get that money in your hands ASAP. If you dont have a checking account yet, nows the time to sign up for one. There are a ton of banks to choose from, so shop around forone that works best for you. We recommend one with no fees, no nadir balance requirements, easy access to ATMs and a good interest rate.Once you have your checking account in place, sign up for direct deposit at work. Youll most likely receive a form for it on your first day, but if not, ask your HR or payroll department about it. Also, youll need to fill in some i nformation on this form, including your name, banks name, checking account number and bank routing number. Lastly, youll need to include a voided check with the form (literally a blank check that has the word VOID written on it in big letters). Once youve completed these steps, you wont have to worry about receiving a paper check anymore. Your money will arrive in your account ASAP on payday.Pro TipAlways have at leastone and a half months worth of take-home payin your checking account at all times so that you can cover all of your expensesand whatever else life throws your way.Scheduling automatic bill payNow that your paycheck is being directly deposited into your checking account, schedule automatic bill payments so you never miss a deadline. Lots of companies allow this option for customers, so check in with your credit card, electric, phone and any other company that you pay a bill to every month.Youll also want to sign up for automatic transfers so you can save money every mon th without even thinking about it. You can do this by opening a savings account - preferably a high-interest savings account- and then scheduling the transfer of funds for every payday. If youre not sure how much to save, try the 60-20-20 budget, where you save 20 percent of your income, spend 20 percent of your income and pay off your bills and necessities with the other 60 percent of your income.Pro TipMaximize your money by connecting your bills to arewards credit cardthat offers cash back, points or miles. Then, schedule automatic bill payments for that credit card so you never miss that payment. Credit cards are agreat way to build creditand achieve an excellent credit score. You canstart with a simple Google Sheet. Just type in all of your expenses, compare that with your income and make sure you have enough to cover it all.Paying down debtYour debt, whether its student loans or credit cards, is part of your monthly bills. Make paying it off a priority. Once youve paid the minimum, consider paying a little more toward the principal if you can. Itll help you save money by not paying as much interest in the long run.Building an emergency fundSaving any amount of money is great, but you should really aim to build upan emergency fund. Once you have six to nine months worth of expenses saved, plus a little more, you can start putting more money toward other things, like the principal on your debt or an investment account.InvestingOnce youre in a good place with paying your bills and saving money, consider investing some cash. The Bio-Arcade

The Bio-Arcade The Bio-Arcade The Bio-ArcadeThe pleasure of playing video games springs, at least in part, from the feelings of control and power that saturate the player, however temporarily. In the end, though, the Q*berts, the Marios, and the Master ChiefPetty Officer John-117s, are just lights on the screen, code in the machine. Nothing alive, or even tangible, has been driven, jumped, or killed. But now gamers weary of the merely digital can get their power trip on playing a video game where theyre in control of an actual living organism.Ingmar H. Riedel-Kruse, a professor of bioengineering at Stanford University, wanted to allow everyday people to experience the microbiologic processes that are normally hidden from us in new ways, enabled by modern technology, he says. We all can look through a microscope and binnensee these cells, but you can never really interact with them and touch them. In a paper published in Plos One in October, he offers a blueprint for a device that all ows gamers, hobbyists, and budding scientists to turn microbes to Pac Men.In short, with a smart phone, a joystick, an off-the-shelf eyepiece, some LEDs, a handful of 3D printed parts, and some Euglena cells, bio-gamers can be directing a microbe through a maze in a matter of hours. The price for these parts is less than a $100less than $60 if you have access to a 3D printer. The cells (which are both cheap and safe) can be ordered from a school supply company and will last for months unrefrigerated.LudusScope 3D printed microbiology game console. Image Stanford UniversityOnce assembled, the phone shows whats going on under the DIY microscope. At the start its nothing mora than Euglena cells swimming willy-nilly. But once players tap the image of one of the Euglena cells, a Pac Man character instantly appears superimposed on top of it, as well as a surrounding maze with edible dots. The Pac Man/Euglena cell unit can then be steered through the maze with the joystick, gobbling dots a s it goes, just as the original arcade character did back in the 1980s. The joystick turns the LEDs on and off, attracting (and repulsing) the cells, which are light sensitive. In another game the cells are athletes on a soccer field who can dribble a soccer ball down the screen and can pass it to other cells or kick for a goal.Getting a bunch microbes to behave according to plan on a soccer field was as difficult as getting a bunch of five year olds to behave according to plan on a soccer field. There were a number of challenges, says Riedel-Kruse. These cells have circadian rhythms and other influences, so the way they respond to the light may vary at different times of the day and between days. On the other hand, maybe thats also what makes the flavoryou interact with something that is living and less predictable. However thrilling the joy of cell manipulation, The LudusScope is not meant for fun alone. The hope is that it will educate on three different levels in constructing the device in playing the games and in experimentation. You have augmented play which basically transitions into more serious scientific inquiry, where you can make measurements, says Riedel-Kruse. You see the cells swimming across the screen and you have real time tracking, which tells you how fast the cells are moving. To ramp up the educational value of the game system, Riedel-Kruses lab has received a seed grant from the NIH to develop a kind of kit with all the necessary elements. If mass-produced, the cost of a LudusScope kit would likely go below $30. At that price point, the LudusScope may become the first videogame kids are allowed to bring to school. For me the key tagline is to really make biology accessible, says Riedel-Kruse, to not only look through a microscope and see, but to influence what you see.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. You have augmented play which basically transitions into more serious scientific inquiry, where you can make measurements.Prof. Ingmar H. Workplace Screaming a Self-Defeating Effort

Workplace Screaming a Self-Defeating Effort To be pathological or nearly so, behavior doesnt have to be menacing or insane. Stupid, pointless and self-sabotaging behavior, such as screaming at employees, will do as close approximations, especially when the consequences for the individual or for others are dire.Acting in a merely neurotically self-defeating way, especially when it is habitual, is sometimes enough, even if notlage necessary, for pathology. Screaming at an employee (or anybody else, for that matter) is a case in point. An irascible bosss (frequent) screaming at an employee in order to motivate her is an example of what can demonstrate both pathology and stupidity (which are, in virtue of being equally maladaptive, closely related, although, of course, not identical). The Three Legs of PathologyAlthough the term is used far too casually, and far too often without any clear definition ( even in psychiatric literature), pathological behavior can perhaps best be understood as behavior that isSelf-defeating, self-frustrating or self-destructive (e.g., pathological dieting to the point of emaciation or even death)Without any rationally predictable or predicted net benefit to anyone (e.g., pointless, needless, yet compulsive lying that is unmotivated by any anticipated rational gain, as opposed to the calculated and strategic lying of spies and ponzi-scheme operators)Unjustifiably and dangerously anti-social (e.g., sociopathic criminal behavior)When at least one of the above applies, a particular case of office screaming may prima facie be viewed as pathological. Just as gambling and lying come in both pathological and non-pathological forms, office screaming per se can be non-pathological, depending on the specifics of the case, e.g., whether employees somehow positively respond to being screamed at. (This suggests that social pathology is best defined as an n-person r elationship, not as a single-person trait. If the screaming works, its not pathological, even if scary or irritating.)What will make the screaming both stupid and pathological is the circumstance in which although repeated outbursts are intended to improve employee performance, they are very likely to impair it, making the screaming self-defeating. This is what will happen when (as is commonly the case) the employee can take flight (quit), fight back (even if only passive aggressively, e.g., by working more carefully and therefore much more slowly), or feel so much fright or resentment as to be unable to concentrate on the job.Self-Defeating Brooms and BossesSuch self-defeating actions, like that of a badly frayed and disintegrating broom that mostly sweeps up its own broken and shed bristles, are forms of self-contradiction the means adopted preclude and subvert achieving the ends. Ones stated goals are contradicted by ones chosen means. The solution, like sweeping with a damaged b room, perpetuates or exacerbates the problem. Its a bit like a goth teenagers trying to get her parents to love jarring dub-step and ear-splitting punk rock by turning up the volume the louder the message, the more deaf to it the target audience becomes. More achieves lessresult self-defeat. This frustrating outcome is especially likely when the dramatic medium (a megaphone-volume scream) dwarfs the basic message (Please work harder). The pathologically screaming boss is in the contradictory state and situation of seeking workplace harmony (in terms of smooth performance) by creating organizational, interpersonal and personal disharmony (the latter being his internal disharmony in the form of frustration and the shared perception of a conflict) by attempting to increase productivity by jeopardizing it and by trying be respected or feared while in fact triggering resentment, resistance or retreat. It is often said that insanity is doing the saatkorn thing over and over again and expecti ng different results. Although this definition has its flaws (e.g., bending metal over and over again and expecting it to split, far from being an insane notion, is perfectly intelligent), it is a useful diagnostic in some instances, including instances of office screaming.Smart ScreamingThe only circumstance in which screaming at an employee doesnt carry the risk of amounting to a huge self-defeat is when the employee cannot quit, cannot resist and is not so traumatized by it as to be unable to do her job. Such situations do existfor instance, the relationship between a waking and hungry screaming infant (employer) and its harried mother (employee). But given the odds against such successful screaming in other contexts, characterizing it as high-risk self-defeating behavior seems right. When it persists, despite being virtually guaranteed to fail, such screaming deserves to be labeled pathological, or at least really stupid.Using the three criteria given above to determine whether s pecific behaviors, thoughts, attitudes, etc., are pathological, labeling screaming as pathological seems warranted if the outbursts are self-defeating, demonstrably without benefit to anyone and/or unjustifiably anti-social (or unprofessional), with the co-existence of any dire consequences as a compounding factor. To the extent that the screamer is a boss or an infant who not only can get away with such high-decibel onslaughts, but can also get what (s)he wants, the screaming is not evidence of pathology. Instead, it is merely evidence of..being a baby.

Why people doing favors and giving freebies can put us on edge

Why people doing favors and giving freebies can put us on edgeWhy people doing favors and giving freebies can put us on edgeGetting a basket of free goodies sent to us at work may bring some of us elation. But for some of us, these kinds of freebies put us on edge. If youre one of the many people who walk down the free sample aisle at the mall with dread, theres a scientific name for what youre feeling reciprocity anxiety, a termthe authors behind a new Journal of Economic Psychology study defined as feeling anxious in a situation that requires them to reciprocate or when they anticipate such a situation.Reciprocity anxiety is why freebies make us uncomfortableThe team of researchers developed an 11-item scale you can consult to see if you experience this particular kind of social anxiety. Here are some of themIll never ask for help if I dont have to, to avoid owing othersUsually, I dont accept favors unless I am sure I can pay back all the favors quicklyI hesitate to ask for help be cause then I dont need to think about what I might give in returnIm restless and on edge when I owe someoneIf you feel reciprocity anxiety, you do not take comfort from what people give you you worry about what this favor means you now owe. You may be struck by the urge to avoid any kind of social obligation you will need to reciprocate and are distressed at the thought that you may have to pay someone back. Instead of seeing a favor as a freebie, you fixate on perceived unseen strings attached. You may see relationships as more transactional. When a coworker offers to pick up the check, you focus more on the anxiety that you will need to pay for their lunch next time.In one experiment, participants were asked to imagine getting a free drink at a store. Participants who scored high in reciprocity anxiety said they felt less customer satisfaction at this freebie and would be less willing to return to the store. For some of us, getting freebies perks us up. But if someone rebuffs your favor, do not take it personally recognize that these socially anxious recipients may be seeing a different message than what you are seeing. You are signaling generosity, but your recipient is seeing dollar signs.

3 Career Mistakes to Avoid When You Hate Your Job -The Muse

3 Career Mistakes to Avoid When You Hate Your Job -The Muse3 Career Mistakes to Avoid When You Hate Your Job There are plenty of things you could do to cope when you hate your job. You could vent. You could try to find a solution. Or, you could throw yourself into a job search because you cant stomach the idea of going back for one more day. All three of those moves are reasonable. But what you cant do is make the following three mistakes because theyll only hurt your reputation and career. And thats notlage good for you at all.1. You Cant Stop CaringOK, thats not entirely fair. Im not telling you to find a way to be passionate about a gig that you just cant stand. But you cant flaunt your feelings in a way thats disrespectful to everyone around you. For example, just because youre not pumped to start your day doesnt make it OK to casually stroll into work 30 minutes late with your headphones blasting while everyone else is trying to work.Nor is it acceptable to completely mail it i n because you couldnt care less if a project or task even gets done. This behavior doesnt just affect your co-workers, but eventually you, too. Remember The people sitting in that room are your future references and you want to leave this job on the most positive note possible. Not to mention, its probably not their fault that youre no longer fulfilled, so taking it out on them makes you a crappy co-worker (and if it is their fault, consider this great practice in dealing with challenging people). 2. You Cant Avoid Looking for a New JobTheres probably at least a little part of you who thinks that no matter how badeanstalt your job is, youre just way too tired to go home after a long day of work and start looking for something new. And I get it. Doing something you dont enjoy is exhausting. The problem is that nobodys going to do this for you, so youre going to be stuck at your job indefinitely if you constantly avoid it.Want to make the whole thing easier to swallow? Block out time for searching on your calendar for an hour here and there throughout the week. Youll quickly notice that having a regularly scheduled block (or blocks) of time set aside will not only make you hate job searching less, but youll maybe look forward to cranking out a few applications in the time youve set aside for yourself. Just one more thing you can check off your to-do list.READY TO MAKE A CAREER MOVE LIKE YESTERDAY?Trust us, we know the feeling. Thats why we have 10,000+ jobs waiting for you.landsee all of them here 3. You Cant Keep it to YourselfI know you might be thinking, Im being a good trooper. Why should anyone know how much I cant stand this place? Your resilience is admirable, but the truth is that at some point, youll bottle up a lot of frustration to the point where you take it out on someone (or something) in an incredibly unproductive way. Not only that, but theres really nothing to gain from trying to figure it all out yourself. While you might think that your closes t friends and family appreciate the fact that youre not bothering them about whats happening at work, the truth is that they probably have a feeling that things arent awesome right now anyway. So go ahead and trust them with what youre thinking. And dont worry- if they run out of things to say to make you feel better or get sick of hearing you complain, theyll let you know.As a band I still love once sang Work sucks, I know. I want nothing more than for you to find something that you love to do for money, and I completely understand your predicament. It might be hard to drag yourself to the office to do that thing you hate to do, but you that doesnt give you free reign to start behaving unprofessionally on the job. Youre better than that and you owe it to future you to step it up a notch.

This Should Be Your Work-Life Balance Mantra - The Muse

This Should Be Your Work-Life Balance Mantra - The Muse This Should Be Your Work-Life Balance Mantra What’s the difference between a car and a human being? A car is efficient. A human is not. Let me explain: A car only has one job- to go fast in a certain direction. And that’s why it can be so efficient. Humans, on the other hand, have many jobs. Therefore, it’s impossible for us to do them all well. We cannot possibly be perfect employees, perfect friends, and perfect at every other activity all at once. No matter how many multitasking articles we read. Rather than continuing to strive for 100% in every area of your life, watch this video from The School of Life and remind yourself that you aren’t a car- and that “everything worth fighting for unbalances your life.” Photo of woman running courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-ins - The Muse

How to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-ins - The Muse How to Ask Your Boss for Regular Check-ins So, you’re feeling really disconnected from your boss. You like them, but you never seem to be on the same page. They’re always assigning you new projects but never giving you feedback, or they’re in so many meetings that you rarely see them. This is why having regular one-on-ones with your boss is so important- it helps you address concerns in the moment, get your questions answered, and build a rapport with your boss that makes your working relationship more cohesive, productive, and honest. Of course, this isn’t always the case at some companies. Maybe it’s not their policy, or your manager oversees so many people it would be hard for them to meet with everyone. That said, it never hurts to ask! So, what exactly can you say to convince them to set aside some time for you? Your email could look something like this: Hi [Manager’s Name], I really appreciated meeting with you about [discussion you met about recently]. It was incredibly helpful in [what you got out of the meeting]. As a result, I was wondering if we could schedule regular check-ins together? Even if it’s just for 10-15 minutes a week, I’d love to be able to bounce ideas off you and keep you updated on what I’m working on, as well as give you an opportunity to give me any constructive feedback you might have on my work. I’m happy to work around your schedule, as well as make it a biweekly or monthly meeting instead. Please let me know if this might be possible and what works best for you. Thank you! [Your Name] Or, you can bring it up when you have some time alone together: I’ve noticed that when we meet together in person to discuss [topic] I’m more confident in my approach. So, I was wondering if you might consider having regular one-on-ones together? I imagine we won’t have urgent stuff to talk about every week, but I’d love to have some time for just us two to go over what you expect of me and how I can better work with you. As you might notice, the key is to emphasize why it’s beneficial for them- because it’ll help you be a better employee to manage, and help them streamline the work they give you. Along those same lines, it’s just as important to give them options and say you’re open to adjusting the schedule and agenda once you both get into the swing of things. Maybe a weekly meeting feels excessive and you run out of things to talk about, or maybe you agree to send status updates in advance so the time can be spent discussing bigger topics. Regardless of what you decide upon, know that setting up this meeting is truly managing up 101. You not only make your life easier, but by being so proactive you make yourself look pretty damn good in your manager’s eyes.

How to Scope Out an Office That Fits Your Values

How to Scope Out an Office That Fits Your Values How to Scope Out an Office That Fits Your Values Compartmentalizing is so 2000. A slight blurring of the lines between work and home is actually the norm now, and office designs need to reflect that. Working in an office that reflects your own values is not only a possibility today, but it’s  also an element you should seek out on the job hunt. Etsy   wanted the design of its new offices , for example, to reflect its customers’ and employees’ attention to economic, social and environmental concerns. The beautiful new space, furnished with pieces made by Etsy sellers and local artists, meets sustainability standards and encourages creative collaboration.  People who share those values would not only find a comfortable home in such a space, but would also instinctively embrace these values in their interactions with customers. When job hunting, consider these aspects to find an office space that reflects your values. Browse photos inside of your ideal companies on Glassdoor. Employer profiles feature snapshots and videos that can help you make the best decision for your next big job. Companies that take your needs into account know location is key. Our offices are five blocks from the beach in a neighborhood rich with great food, happy hours and a bustling social scene. This fun atmosphere gets our team stoked not only about working at Hawke, but also about working together. When they’ve been slamming their heads against the wall for hours on end, our teammates can say, “F*ck it. Let’s go for sushi and a beer.” They can cut out for a bit, fuel up and then come back to make up the few hours they spent at the bar, making it easy to be social and get real with each other. In this virtuous cycle, your co-worker becomes a human, not just the guy who pulls Google Analytics data. Offices that feel like busy coffee shops get old fast. Open, 100 percent flexible workspaces are all the rage, but believe me - working in your   own  space is so much better. You want a desk, at least, where you can set a picture, stash a few snacks and have a sense of ownership. Studies show  that workers in open spaces tend to be more distracted, less collaborative and even less friendly. Bottom line: Your own space is better for you and for the company. Are the walls, tables and common spaces fun? Do you have cool art or pictures of the team - something to instill pride when they look around? Your new company’s office should feel like a cool hotel or a buddy’s bitchin’ penthouse, not a cubicle farm. Signs of individuality mean you’ll likely be able to express your personality at work, too. While some employers might worry that such an environment would be distracting, research shows that people who can add personal touches to the office actually work   15 percent faster  and experience fewer health issues than those in minimalist spaces. Leadership shouldn’t be cut off from the team. In our office, each team’s director sits with his or her squad, making open communication, problem-solving and course corrections easier and less stressful. It’s a two-way street - if I’m sitting within speaking distance of my direct reports, they’re always ready to help me prepare for a meeting or write an email, and vice versa. What’s more, a study found that   10 percent of performance  is driven by that of a worker’s office neighbors. If you see team leads or managers and employees working in one space together, rest assured that your productivity and growth won’t be hindered by miscommunication or slacking co-workers. Ping-Pong tables and amazing cafeterias are nice, but the truth is you’ll spend most of your day at your desk, not playing video games and snacking. Some people assume the best younger employees will demand “fun” workspaces. In reality, fun and creativity are   more important to professionals of yesteryear . If the workplace is too much fun, you’ll never want to leave - and that’s no accident. Such a space might be designed to encourage people to put in long hours and late nights. (If you see bunk beds, run.) At our company, we try to kick people out after a certain point every night to ensure they maintain a balanced personal work-life integration. We want to keep them happy and productive, after all, and working them 24/7 won’t do the trick. In the end, how a company designs its office space reflects its values and shows how closely they mirror your own. Finding one whose values match yours - and that attends to the needs of its employees - will go a long way toward ensuring that you’re happy not only when you go home at night, but also while you give it your all - all day long. He enjoys building businesses, playing golf, improving his Krav Maga and jiujitsu game, writing, studying business tax loopholes, and eating Mexican food. The Dos and Donts of Dressing as a Lady Lawyer

The Dos and Donts of Dressing as a Lady Lawyer The Dos and Donts of Dressing as a Lady Lawyer As a woman, it is difficult enough to figure out how to dress without hearing other people’s opinions on the matter.   Unfortunately, people have a lot of opinions! Dressing as a lady lawyer is one of the most talked about topics when it comes to the dress code for lawyers in general, and it’s worth discussing some of the dos and don’ts of the clothes women are wearing to their legal jobs. Do Dress Conservatively One thing is for certain- Ally McBeal did not dress appropriately. Her skirts were too short, and her blouses showed too much cleavage, at least by courtroom standards. Lady lawyers should make sure that their outfits ?cover them in such a way that their clothing does not distract from the point they are trying to make. Practicing the law is all about using your brain, so your intelligence should be your most prominent feature. Pantsuits and skirt suits are safe options here, along with moderately comfortable shoes (read: not stilettos, but also not crocks).?? Don’t Wear Clothes that Don’t Fit While showing too much skin is distracting, wearing ill-fitting clothes is also cause for alarm when it comes to wardrobe. One of the most important things to remember when choosing work clothing is to make sure you’re buying what fits you- feeling good in your clothes is half the battle. Do Show Your Sense of Style It has been discussed before, but there is nothing wrong with weaving some of your own style into your business wardrobe. Do you have a favorite color? Wear that color shirt under your suit jacket. Do you like sparkly things? Include one accessory, as long as it’s not distracting. Just because you’re in a stuffy courtroom doesn’t mean that your style has to be stifled. Just remember- the other people in the room should notice your intelligence before they notice what you wear. As long as you follow that rule of thumb, you should be just fine. Don’t Go Overboard As previously stated, you are free to include your fashion sense into your wardrobe but don’t overdo it. Just because you like sequins doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to wear a bedazzled jacket in court. Find understated ways to show your personality, and you can’t go wrong. Do Follow Any Explicit Dress Codes Does your firm or court have a specific and explicit dress code? Don’t even dream of not following it! That is the easiest way for you to go wrong with dressing as a lady lawyer. Dress codes are in place for a reason (even if the reason doesn’t seem to make sense). Nothing says “unprofessional” like someone who blatantly disregards the dress code. If you want the freedom to start incorporating your own style into your wardrobe, start by making sure everything follows the dress code and build from there. Don’t Tolerate People Telling You How to Dress Aside from a written wardrobe policy, you shouldn’t have to tolerate others commenting on what you wear on a daily basis. It is a growing trend in the legal realm- everyone from law school professors to judges seem to think they should have a say in what female lawyers wear to work. And their statements are all over the map- some think skirts are distracting while others think pantsuits are too masculine. To all the lady lawyers out there- you do you, as long as it’s within reason.   Dressing as a female lawyer isn’t always easy- there is a fine line that must be carefully balanced upon, like a tightrope. The most important thing to remember is that you should be able to keep your own sense of style while still following all the dress codes applicable to the courtroom. Don’t let the myriad of voices bother you too much!

The Dos and Donts for writing your first post-grad resume

The Do’s and Don’ts for writing your first post-grad resume The Do’s and Don’ts for writing your first post-grad resume If you’ve recently graduated or are about to graduate from college, you’ve (hopefully) started applying to every job you can find that sound like a good fit. Leaving school might feel like starting from scratch, but in college you’ve gained a well-rounded education, a ton of management and leadership skills, and hopefully some work exposure through part-time jobs or semester-long internships. As a post-grad, it can often feel like the whole world is at your fingertips, but you have no clue where to start the career search.

How to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out

How to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out How to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out 10 Ways to Make Your LinkedIn Profile Stand Out Whether or not you’re looking for a new job right now, you still need a LinkedIn profile that stands out. With more than 500 million users worldwide, LinkedIn is easily the largest professional network on the planet. It's not only large but also highly effective in helping professionals in any industry get and stay connected. So why should that matter to you? LinkedIn is your chance to get your name and face in front of hundreds (or even thousands) of professionals in your industry. If you're looking for a job, that's essential. However, it's not enough to just have a LinkedIn page. You need a great LinkedIn profile that draws attention, says the right things, and helps you really connect with the people who can help you expand your career. Here are 10 simple tips to help make your LinkedIn profile stand out. 1. Add your headshot The simplest thing you can do to upgrade your LinkedIn profile is to add a good headshot. Be creative if that fits with what you do or who you are, but remember that this is the first impression people will get from your page. If you don't have a professional headshot to use, it's worth the investment. With the huge numbers of people on LinkedIn, those without a photo are easily pushed aside. 2. Create an eye-catching headline Your headline is the first bit of text that shows up right below your name on your LinkedIn profile. The default settings will fill this in with your current position and that's okay for starters but it can be whatever you want. You have 120 characters to work with, so why not add on a little? Think of it as a small billboard advertisement for you and what you do. Instead of just listing your job title, mention your specialty and how you benefit your company or customers. For example: Advertising Sales Rep helping clients create winning branding strategies. Over 300 successful clients. Just like that you've told them your job, what you bring to the table, and provided a little credibility easily and effectively. 3. Craft an interesting summary Your summary can be a longer form of your headline; here you have 2000 characters to work with so you can dive in a little deeper. Don't focus on just your past experience but on what you do well and what you can bring to a prospective employer. Keep in mind that keywords are crucial here use words that you want to be strongly connected to in your field. Attention spans are short these days, so don't use up all of those 2000 characters. Instead, keep it to less than half of that. Be creative and paint a picture of who you really are as a professional. Related:How to Write a Powerful LinkedIn Profile Summary 4. Highlight your experience You can do better than simply cutting and pasting your resume onto your LinkedIn profile. You don't have the same two-page rule here, but you do have internet readers' short attention spans. Be sure to include any jobs that you deem relevant to where you want your career to go, and use two to four interesting and impressive bullet points for each job you include. Also, use good action words to show not just what you did, but what you accomplished in each position. 5. Use visual media Did you know that you can add a background photo/cover photo on LinkedIn just like on Twitter and Facebook? It's simple to do and it makes your LinkedIn profile stand out, so pick a theme that speaks to your profession or personality. LinkedIn also allows you to connect other media to your profile like Youtube videos, infographics you name it. Get creative with relevant media and make your page jump off the screen and demand attention. 6. Customize your URL Your LinkedIn URL is the web address for your profile. The default URL will have your name and some gibberish numbers on it. Why not make it something more relevant? Along the right side of the profile, you will see the option to edit your public URL. Use that option to make your URL more concise and neat again, it only takes a couple of minutes and it can make your URL much more memorable. Related:How to Create a Custom LinkedIn URL in 3 Easy Steps 7. Start making connections It seems obvious, but it can be easy to forget sometimes. You need to keep growing your connections as you meet people because of LinkedIn's system of first, second, and third degree connections; having a lot of connections helps keep you visible to others. That being said, while you can connect with people you don't know, it's preferable to connect with individuals whom you know personally, have worked with, or met in a professional capacity. 8. Ask for recommendations This is a big one. Think of people that you've developed a good working relationship within the past. When you edit your profile, there is a link to click that says Ask for Recommendations. Click on it. You choose what you'd like to be recommended for and can choose a list of people from your connections. Then, send it out and hope you get some great feedback. Recommendations are a key to making your LinkedIn profile stand out. Employers want to know that others have approved of your work. Help your karma out and write recommendations for some of your connections in return. 9. Keep your page active LinkedIn is more than an online resume it's a networking social media site. That means to get the most out of it, you need to remain active. Check out what other people are posting, engage them with thoughtful comments, and like and share posts that strike you as helpful. You can also join groups that are on LinkedIn. Whatever your professional interests are, from marketing to accounting, there are going to be groups talking about it. Join one or two and interact within that group. It's a great way to meet some new people and share ideas. 10. Check your LinkedIn profile strength If you look at your current profile, there is a gauge on the right-hand side that gives you a Profile Strength measurement. Essentially, this is telling you how completely you've filled out your profile. Keep adding more and using the site's tips until that gauge rates you All-Star. It's simple, but it can help you see if you've overlooked something. LinkedIn is a powerful tool and one that's really easy to use. Make the most of it by optimizing your profile to grab attention, sell your skills, and validate your accomplishments. You want your page to be visually appealing to visitors while making it easy for them to get a feel for who you are and what you really can do for them professionally. Your Secret Weapon for Career Success

Your Secret Weapon for Career Success Your Secret Weapon for Career Success The business world is tough- especially if you want to rise through the ranks and put yourself on an executive path. If you’re ambitious and want to build a great career, it’s going to take hard work and lots of it.The good news is that all that hard work should pay off over time. The better news? There’s something else you can do to make your career path easier to navigate, more successful, and even more enjoyable. That something is building your own career advisory board, and it’s a strategy I recommend to everyone, no matter what stage you’re at in your career.A career advisory board is a group of people in your industry- both seasoned professionals and contacts just a few years ahead of you- who agree to act as mentors to you as you grow in your profession. It generally starts as something small and casual, with you reaching out as you need help dealing with an issue at work or a career decision. However, as you build your career, it has the potential to become somethin g much larger and more formal (think the President’s Cabinet).Related:  Your Boss, or Your Mentor? Why You Should Know the DifferenceThe benefit of having a “board” versus just one or two mentors is that you can draw from a diversified set of experiences and expertise. Say, for example, you’re deciding whether to gun for a promotion at your current company or take a management job with a competitor. What better way to navigate such a complicated decision than to have multiple perspectives on the best way to move forward?Despite the obvious benefits, I’m amazed by how few people actually take the time to build an advisory board for themselves. If you’re sold on the concept, here are a few steps to get you started.1. Mine Your ContactsIf you’ve already been in the workforce for a few years, chances are you already have some current or potential mentors that could fit the bill for your advisory board. You want your board to be somewhat diversified in terms of expertise an d industry knowledge, so start by identifying candidates from your own network- old bosses, former colleagues, friends who are in a similar field- then figure out where the gaps are. This should help you narrow your focus when you go to identify new board members.2.  Network in a Targeted WayBuilding the rest of your advisory board starts with building a broader network, which most people do in a happenstance way. They attend a cocktail party, collect a few business cards, and perhaps even connect on LinkedIn. And while they may amass a large quantity of new contacts, if the quality’s not there, it can translate to a lot of wasted time and effort.Instead, try building your network with the end result in mind. Start by identifying people in your industry and function who you think could be potential mentors, then work backward to figure out how to meet them. An easy way to make inroads is to find a “common interest contact.” For example, if your target works at ABC Corp, try to find another person at ABC Corp who has something in common with you- perhaps you went to the same business school, served in the same branch of the military, or even play soccer in the same weekend league. Find that person (or multiple people) and reach out, explaining what you have in common and asking if they want to connect in order to expand both of your professional networks. Eventually, as that relationship grows, you can ask for an intro to your original target.Related: 4 Ways to Make a Real Connection When Networking  3.  Make the AskOnce you’ve connected with your potential mentors, you’ll want to officially ask them to be a part of your advisory board.Exactly how you approach this will completely depend on the relationship you have with that person. For example, you might be explicit: “I’m building out my own personal advisory network, and I’d like to know if I can stay in touch with you a little more often.” Or you might keep it casual: “As I build my care er, would it be okay if I bounced ideas off of you from time to time?”Related: Be My Mentor? Craft the Perfect Email to Someone You AdmireIf the mentor says yes, be ready to set expectations for future communications. The cadence and format, again, will depend on the mentor and his or her availability and preferences. For some board members, you may be able to set up a monthly coffee date or a quarterly Skype call. For others, you may just want to reach out from time to time when you have big issues or decisions on the horizon.  4.  Set Realistic GoalsThis process may sound straightforward enough, but if you’re extremely busy or introverted, it may seem nearly impossible to execute. But give yourself a break, because career advisory boards are not built overnight. Start by setting reasonable goals- say, meeting two people in your industry within the next three months- and go from there.Even these small wins can bear fruit. First, you’ll continue to build your broader network, which is always a good thing. Eventually, you’ll land one mentor, and one is better than none. And over time, one mentor can turn into three, then perhaps even five or 10. But you have to start somewhere and give it continual effort.Once your board starts to take shape, you can start to reap the rewards of having this strategy in place. Keep in touch with your board members on a regular basis, start documenting professional challenges you want to run by them, and keep track of how things go when you use their advice- they’ll appreciate hearing that their guidance has helped you. And above all, say thank you often and in many ways.Yes, the business world is tough, but you don’t have to face it alone. Building a career advisory board isn’t an easy or fast process, but it’s worth the time and effort. And in the end, all the connections you’ve made along the way will give you the edge you need to rise to the top.Photo of people talking courtesy of Shutterstock.

10 Top Emerging Technologies in Engineering, Part 1

10 Top Emerging Technologies in Engineering, Part 1 10 Top Emerging Technologies in Engineering, Part 1 10 Emerging Technologies in Engineering, Part 1 Ingenuity and vision are the hallmarks of great engineering. Envisioning the machines of tomorrow is especially important, and some technologies visible and invisible could change the way we design and make products. 5G networks will provide faster connections, even in cars. Image: Intel New communication technologies will link up machines much like cellular technologies interconnecting humans. These technologies could make it common for hospitals to monitor patients as soon as they are in an ambulance, or for factories to be alerted to hazardous conditions by remote industrial control rooms. One of these critical technologies is 5G, which had a coming out party at the recent Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show held in Barcelona. The show is largely a showcase for the newest mobile handsets, but the latest Internet of Things technologies also took the spotlight. We explore the ten top trends from the show. 1) Goodbye, 4G. 5G is the faster successor to 4G, and it is coming soon. By the end of 2018, ATT will launch its 5G network for mobile devices, and soon after, it will be in machines, cars, IoT devices, drones, and infrastructure equipment. Simply explained, 5G will allow machines to make long-distance data calls to other mechanical and electrical devices at speeds faster than todays home internet connections. 5G modems were shown by Intel, Qualcomm, and Sierra Wireless, while Ericsson talked about 5G technologies for IoT devices and machines. Ubimetro boasted about a 5G connected street lamp, while Germanys Fraunhofer Institute demonstrated a 5G security camera with superfast connection to a computer so it could instantly recognize a face. Also for You: The Emerging Technology Award in Manufacturing. 2) Blockchain. Many think blockchain is the same as bitcoin, but it isnt. Blockchain is the underlying technology that makes bitcoin possible, and it can be adapted to manufacturing. Companies like Cisco and Nokia are exploring ways to log timestamped data sent from sensors on a digital ledger which is at the center of blockchain and instantly verifying it as being genuine. A deeper audit trail on a blockchain could help in the effective management of sensors and machines. 3) 5G Robot. NTT DoCoMo of Japan demonstrated a 5G humanoid robot that uses 5G to mirror the operators movements in real time and perform tasks remotely. The idea was to demonstrate the speed of 5G and how it can mimic human movement almost instantly. NTT also expects to put 5G IoT devices all over 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, so if you plan to be there, watch out. 4) Augmented Identity. The concept of augmented identity is key to preventing future car theft. IDEMIA, a French company, wants to bring facial recognition for the authorized use of cars. Enroll your face with a system, and a car will unlock only if it recognizes your face. The technology uses sensors, location tracking, and software. IDEMIA has a larger goal of enabling a more secure shared driving culture. For the rest of the list, read on in Part 2. For Further Discussion
